Recently, we assisted a customer with replacing and installing a new compressor for their LG Refrigerator in the small town of Sperry, just North outside of Tulsa.
The customer was experiencing some issues with the cooling temperatures of their refrigerator and decided to give us a call to see if we could help.
After we conducted our thorough diagnostic process, we were able to determine that the source of the problem was resulting from their compressor not working as it should have been.
In some cases of older refrigerator models, it’s easier to bite the bullet and buy a new refrigerator versus spending close to the same amount to repair their old compressor with one that’s still equally compatible with their model, which can be far and few between at times.
While the price of a replacement compressor for a newer refrigerator model can also sometimes be high, it’s still much more manageable and reasonable than getting a newer model.
Once we replaced the old compressor with the new one, we then installed a brand new filter drier to go along with the compressor,
Finally, we added some fresh refrigerant back into the system, turned everything back on, closed it all up, and then everything was back up and running like normal.
A refrigerator’s compressor is essentially the heart of the unit. As our heart pumps blood throughout our body, a compressor operates similarly with the cycled air.
To start off, the compressor pressurized the refrigerant vapor that’s inside of the unit. This constricted vapor is then pumped into the outer coils of the refrigerator.
As the inner hot gas of the coil meet the outer surrounding temperature of the kitchen, the refrigerant gas turns into a cold, high pressure liquid. Once this liquid flows into the coils of the freezer and the fridge, it then sucks out any heat that may be inside of the space.
Finally, the refrigerant evaporates to its original gas form. From here, it’s then transferred and returned back into the compressor where the entire process starts all over once again.
Every now and then, you’ll hear a faint hum coming from your refrigerator.
This is the compressor doing its work, turning on and off as needed.
If you haven’t heard this sound in a while and your refrigerator doesn’t seem as cool as it should be, then it’s likely that your compressor is experiencing some issues and potentially may need to be replaced.
If you decided to pull your refrigerator out and take off the back panel for a closer look, you’ll find that your compressor is roughly the size of a football and tends to have a large, black encasing. You can give it a quick pat with the back of your hand if you’d like, and if it feels hot to the touch, it likely means it’s overheating.
There are a few other ways and tell-tale signs out there, but in order to truly be sure, it’s always recommended to have an experienced professional take a look before buying a replacement fridge for $2,500+.
